If a ‘73 Fiat can do the run in 2005, I think there’s an argument to be made for trying a 60s Ford and a Spit in about a decade or so...

And any low slung sports car that made it would be a real winner.

what kind of visas does one need to arrange for such a trip? or is it just a show up at the border and they wave you through?

Never looked into it actually :S the event might have some sort of pass that lets its competitors pass through certain countries...

You’ll have to, er...borrow it from your anonymous friends on the internet, but there is a wonderful 4-part mini-doc hosted by Warren Brown of TG Oz fame about the 2005 recreation of that race using period cars.

It is well worth a watch if you can find it.

You make a good point: this would need to be a team sort of thing. Incidentally, I’ve been researching the route and legalities therein. The only big PITA is China - short-term tourists aren’t allowed to run motor vehicles at all and everything on the road there has to be Chinese-plated, no exceptions (though there is Chinese plating for foreign nationals). There’s presumably a way to work that, but after that, the route is Mongolia, Russia, Poland, Germany, etc. - all signatories to Vienna including Mongolia(!). As long as the car gets registered in some way in a signatory country and China, the run is A-OK.

China: Always a pain in the ass. Between the Ranchero and Fairlane, we can carry all the spares that will be necessary for the Spitfire.

Some further info: it is apparently possible to get temporary tags in China for $ExpensiveButNotInsane and to get a Chinese temporary license - both possible to handle in English in Beijing. Each province apparently handles things a little bit differently, but going the full hog with local registration and involvement in the local messes (tag lotteries, etc.) doesn’t appear to be necessary.

I looked into it a little earlier. As long as one has an EU or otherwise cleared car with the country of origin sticker and so on, one can drive through any and all of the Vienna signatory countries, which apparently even includes Mongolia. This leaves only China, in which one would have to apply for a Chinese license and temporary registration for the car. The temporary registration is apparently something of a morass but not impossible, and the license can apparently be arranged to take in English, with a hundred question test requiring 90% for pass (or something like that) and driving test typically waived for EU/other semi-respected licensing states.

O/T here, but looks like I have to sell the BMW :/

Do you want it, or know anyone who does? I’m sure I can work something out on the price for anyone who’s going to fix it instead of pull it to pieces for parts.

Oooh interesting :) i’ll have an ask ariund. What sort of ballpark would you be looking at and what’s left to fix?

Kinja'd!!! davedave1111 > BiTurbo228 - Dr Frankenstein of Spitfires
06/27/2015 at 09:57

Kinja'd!!!0

Basically, everything’s left to fix - I’ve been dithering about selling it, so not doing anything, until I finally realised that if I keep dithering it’s going to deteriorate. Started it up the other day and with a fulky charged battery it started first time.

So, let me see:

Front suspension bushes, might as well do the shocks while you’re there, fix the manifold studs.

Cleaning, paint correction, tiny bit of welding

Possible fuel filler neck replacement (or just don’t fill the tank all the way...)

New tyres all round

I don’t really know what it’s worth in the current market. I had a quick look on Ebay at completed listings, and there don’t seem to be projects going for much under £1k - but if you have a better idea, feel free to make an offer.

What sort of price would make you bite my hand off? I don’t really want to have all the hassle of trying to sell it on Ebay, so there’s definitely a deal to be done.

P.S. I’d say straight swap for the BX, but SWMBO would kill me...

Hmmmmm, most i’d be able to pay for it personally is about 300. Thats as much throwaway money as i can muster at the moment. It’s on the low side but i can guarantee it’ll be fixed up :) i’d even sell it back once it’s on the road if you fancy it

If i had another car to drive at the moment i’d swap the bx, but at the moment the rest of the fleet is under renovation :S

Aww, shame, that’s a bit too low, I think. I’ll have to stick it on Ebay and see what I get for it, but if it’s not significantly higher you can definitely have it. It’ll take a few weeks, I expect, so if you come up with a bit more in the meantime (or find someone else who wants it), let me know.

“at the moment the rest of the fleet is under renovation“

What, all of them?!

Yeah i thought it was too low tbh, but i’ve yet to ask my sisters boyfriend who might be interested. Shall let you know if he’s interested or if i come into some money :)

How much would you be happy with, or would you only really know after you’ve ebayed it?

Annoyingly the lot need work :S the alfa’s alternator beeds changing which is an arse of a job, the jag needs diff bearings that i neglected to change during the lsd swap, the lada’s a deathtrap, the mg and the porsche are otr with minor issues and both mazzers need work on body and engine respectively. Oh, i can’t even borrow my dad’s alfa as the self-levelling shock on the back has blown so its sitting just above the bumpstops :S

Gah. Just got a letter from the managing agents for the block telling me I have 14 days to let them know if I’m getting rid of the car or if I’m going to tax and insure it.

The big problem pricewise is that I have trouble believing the bubble prices these things are fetching, and feel a bit like I’d be ripping you off if I asked for anything like what it’s probably worth on the open market. But £300 feels too low even in light of that, so... I probably ought to just suck up the hassle and stick it on Ebay.

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah stick it up on eBay, if it doesn’t sell in time for you to get it off the block then I can take it off your hands, perhaps for a little more than £300 if a couple of the things I’m eBaying sell too. I’d feel a bit like I was ripping you off too if I’d just straight up take it before giving you a chance on the open market.

Actually, I haven’t asked :S how much would you be happy letting it go for?
